Welcome from the Chairs
Welcome to the 2011 International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound Symposium at the Marriott Marquis in New York City!
This year, the meeting is held in tandem with the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine conference. The ISTU meeting is continuing to grow, with over 250 abstract submissions received this year covering a broad range of topics such as Bubble-Enhanced Delivery, Brain Drug Delivery, Cavitation Studies, Clinical Studies, Transducers and Devices, Tumor Delivery and Treatment, and Gene and Cell Therapy.
There are 28 oral sessions with a total of 112 presentations and five poster sessions with a total of 165 papers, including 22 invited technical presentations and 3 invited clinical presentations. In order to best accommodate all of these, the same structure as in recent ISTU meetings will be followed, with oral sessions organized into two parallel tracks, over all three days.
A Student Paper Competition will also be held this year. The 25 finalists have been selected and will compete for the new award in honor of Nadine Barrie Smith by giving both oral and paper presentations. The student award committee will judge these during Monday afternoon's poster session and the winners will be announced at the second plenary session on Wednesday morning.
We very much hope that all attendees will enjoy the Sunday welcome reception at one of the landmark NYC restaurants, Carmine's, around the corner from the Marriott Marquis; the Monday evening reception in the hotel's Promenade overlooking the nightlights of Times Square; and the Tuesday evening three-hour dinner cruise around Manhattan, departing from the Circle Line Cruise Ship terminal on 42nd Street, a few blocks from the hotel.
We thank our sponsors and exhibitors without which this conference would not be possible. We look forward to seeing all of you in New York next month!

New York City Attractions
Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth at Serendipity
One place to visit after a full day at the convention is Serendipity 3. Opened in 1954, this restaurant has been used for filming in 2 movies,
One Fine Day and
Serendipity. Whether you are looking for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you can find it here. Don't miss the legendary sundaes. Where else can you purchase a $1000 sundae that has been recognized by the
Guinness Book of World Records? Another staple on the menu is the frozen drink selection. Make sure to try the trademarked Frrrozen Hot Chocolate. No, that is not a misprint. Other items on the menu include famous foot-long hot dogs, sandwiches and burgers, soups and salads, and a variety of dinner offerings.
For location, hours, and a complete menu, visit
www.serendipity3.com.
A Sky View of New York City
What's the best way to experience a dazzling view of New York City? There are a variety of vantage points that will allow you to see everything the big city has to offer, but nothing can match the amazing views you will find from atop many of the buildings in Manhattan.
Look no further than the host hotel of this year's event, the New York Marriott Marquis. The
View Restaurant and
View Lounge, located on the 47th and 48th floors of the Marriott, offer spectacular dining and breathtaking views of the city. The restaurant makes one complete rotation every hour. Don't see the landmark you are looking for? In a few moments you will and everything else New York City has to offer. Visit
www.theviewny.com for more information and to make reservations.
Another aptly named restaurant with a view is
Above, located in the Hilton Times Square. Located 25 stories above the ground, this highly acclaimed restaurant provides diners with an impressive view that matches the elegant cuisine.
Want to see the entire city in one quick look? Visit one of New York's most famous landmarks,
The Empire State Building. The 102nd floor observatory is a mere 1224 feet above ground and offers a dramatic view of the city. This building is open the public 365 days a year. Visit the official website
www.esbnyc.com for more information.
Welcome to Broadway!
Catch a Broadway musical, you are in the middle of the theater district after all! Sunday matinee or evening, Tuesday evening or Wednesday matinee (yes, all theaters have that now!) may all be available for favorite shows such as Wicked, Mamma Mia and many more!
Make Your Reservation Now for that "Special" Night Out During the Convention
The convention is a very busy time for attendees. When you have some free time or if you are looking to spend an evening with colleagues, you want to make the most of it. Two candidates for your evening in the city are
Carmine's Restaurant (Italian) and
Virgil's Real Barbecue, both walking distance from the Marriott Marquis Hotel.
Since opening their doors in August 1990, Carmine's has been a favorite of locals and visitors alike. When you walk through the door, you can't help but feel like you are being transported in time. This restaurant is known for large portions, oversized drinks, an exceptional wine list, and unmatched service. From chicken marsala to veal scallopini, all of your favorites are on the menu and served family style. You will
not leave hungry.
Who says you have to go to Memphis for good barbecue? Virgil's is offering up southern hospitality right in the heart of Manhattan. Just as with Carmine's, Virgil's offers up excellent food with unmatched service. Looking for a fun night out? This is your place. Start the evening at the bar and catch your favorite team in action. Head over to the dining room and enjoy traditional favorites such as ribs, chicken, and pork. The extensive menu also includes fish specials and vegetarian offerings.
Carmine's and Virgil's take limited reservations and hold a few tables for guests without reservations. If you have a large party, be sure to contact the Special Events Office. To make reservations, view the menu, or learn more about either establishment, visit their websites:
Carmine's Restaurant and
Virgil's Real Barbecue.
